Power in the Pulpit: Preaching Authority in Late Middle Ages

Friday, November 1st  at 6:15pm
Medieval Fair Free Lecture Series
WEST Norman Public Library, 300 Norman Center Ct.
"Power in the Pulpit: Preaching Authority in Late Middle Ages" presented by Reid Weber, UCO Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities and Philosophy

The content of medieval sermons is one of the most useful and mysterious sources the Middle Ages has to offer. Covering a dizzying array of topics, the medieval sermon sheds a light onto the concerns of the clergy and provides insight into the culture of the day. Of course, nothing on paper can exactly capture what was actually said, so the documents leave us grasping for more detail that is lost to history. This presentation will cover some of the wide range of themes available to medieval scholars from sermon texts, while in particular focusing on the establishment and use of preaching authority in the Middle Ages. In particular, the focus will be on the fifteenth-century Bohemian priest Jan Hus and his approach to preaching in medieval Prague. - Reid Weber
